Free Oil Changes to Support Marine’s “Toys for Tots”

Ice Cold Air Announces 6th Annual Free Oil Changes to Support Marine’s “Toys for Tots”

Ice Cold Air Discount Auto Repair, a Pinellas-based auto repair franchise with 16 bay area locations, is trading free oil changes and tire rotations or $20 in auto repair service to any customer who brings in a new, unwrapped toy for the Marines’ “Toys for Tots” program until December 10th.

This is the sixth year we have joined with the Marines and their worthwhile program, and we are very excited our support makes a positive impact in the lives of children.  Last year our customers donated 1,800 toys for the less fortunate children in our community.  Our customers are eager to support the program again this year, and we hope more people will take advantage of this offer. We are really trying to reach out to the community to double our toy donations from last year. Customers have the option of trading the new toy for an oil change and tire rotation on the spot or exchanging the toy for a voucher for a free future oil change and tire rotation or $20 off any service. Our customers and community have been very good to us, and acting as a drop off location for Toys for Tots is an excellent way for us to give back to the community and our customers for their support.

The donations will be accepted at all 16 Ice Cold Air locations. The toys must be in the original packaging and unwrapped. Those wanting to take advantage of this special should call or stop by any Ice Cold Air location. Visit http://www.icecoldair.com/locations for a list of locations.

Slow economy helping auto repair business. (Bay News 9)

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) – While many companies are looking to cut costs, a local auto repair shop is adding more workers. Robin Hughes, president of Ice Cold Air discount auto repair, says with tough economic times more people are fixing their cars instead of trading them in.

“Between the gas prices being so high and not being able to get credit to buy a new car, people are taking care of their cars longer and keeping them and getting them repaired — taking good care of them,” Hughes said.

Motorist Tracy Roberts is following Hughes theory and plans to keep driving his car.

“I’m not going to buy a new car right now,” Roberts said. “It’s like too unstable, and I’d rather repair mine and, you know, drive it as long as I can.”

However with fewer people buying new vehicles, many automotive dealerships are feeling the pinch.

Bill Heard Chevrolet recently announced it was going out of business, and the shutdown of 14 dealerships affects almost 3,000 employees.

But with 17 shops across the Bay area, Ice Cold Air may be able to help. More repairs mean more jobs, and the company says it’s willing to hire people from businesses that are failing.

“I do believe that there are industries more recession proof like us where we can help take care of people in a time when they need us the most, and we’re here for them,” Hughes said.

Grad Revs Up Career With Franchise

By MARK HOLAN The Tampa Tribune

SOUTH TAMPA – Ashley Butler met Allyn Ayers standing in line at Panera Bread. She was 22 and nearly done with her business degree at the University of South Florida.

He was 62 and beginning to divest himself from the daily operations of the discount auto repair chain he founded 40 years earlier. “I told her business is not for the weak or the lame, but whatever you want to do you can do,” Ayers said. Butler, a Port Tampa native and Robinson High School graduate, promised to call Ayers after finishing her degree.

When she followed up about six months later, he hired her as an assistant. He also attended her 2006 graduation and met her family. “I liked her potential; the way she carried herself,” Ayers said. “She asked tough questions.” Butler soon became the auto chain’s first female franchise owner, taking over Ice Cold Air at 803 W. Hillsborough Ave. Today she owns the busier and larger store at 410 S. Dale Mabry Highway.

“Allyn taught me in layman’s terms the simplicity of business and how hard work and time invested can reward a young person,” said Butler, 24. As a young black woman, the 5-foot-3 Butler doesn’t fit the profile of the typical auto shop owner. “I thought that was going to be a big deal,” Butler said. “At first, the workers were tougher than the customers,” she said of the Hillsborough store. “But I got them to respect me and grow with me.”

A few customers still mistake her for the receptionist. Butler said one of her regular customers gave her a name tag identifying her as the owner to help avoid confusion. “You have the random customer who thinks my tech Keith is the owner,” she said. Technician Keith Cox said Butler brings a positive attitude. “We can be having the hardest day in the world, and she makes it fun,” said Cox, who has worked at the Dale Mabry store for about 10 months.

Butler oversees two employees, handling the books and other administrative work. “Sometimes I’m out in one of the bays holding something in place,” she said. “I don’t act like I know everything.”

Ayers said he is glad he gave Butler an opportunity. “I’ve heard nothing but incredible reports,” he said.
