That Just Sounds Made Up

June 16, 2026

I’ve been in the business a long time. My experience has taught me a thing or fifty about cars, their parts, and how they run. It’s easy to spot a phony, too. I can tell from one conversation whether or not the person I’m dealing with is a legit expert on automobiles and automotive repairs. That’s part of what I love so much about being at Ice Cold Air. I know that the technicians and service managers are at the top of their game when it comes to diagnosing problems and finding the right solutions for any car a customer can drive, push, or pull into the shop!

Being an automotive expert means knowing cars inside and out. It means knowing all the car parts, from the obscure to the ordinary, from the obvious to the ā€œare you sure you didn’t make that up?ā€ And there are a lot of parts that sound completely made up.

Have you ever heard of Donut Gasket or a Dogbone Mount? One’s a ring-shaped exhaust gasket and the other is an engine mount. How about a Snubber or a Jesus Clip? A snubber absorb shocks and reduce metal-on-metal impact while a Jesus Clip is a nickname for the circlips that secure internal engine parts!

Here’s a few other parts that sound too weird to be true:

ā€Wishbone: Connects the car’s wheel to its frame

Little End: Small, top portion of a car's engine connecting rod that links to the piston

Crankshaft Damper or Harmonic Balancer: A crankshaft component that reduces vibration

Crankshaft (Right?!): Mechanical part of a car’s engine that converts up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational motion

Banjo Bolt: A hollow bolt used in a car’s fluid systems

It’s clear to see that some parts have funny names. Others have names that don’t make sense at first but kinda make perfect sense when you think about it. The Banjo Bolt is sorta shaped like a banjo! Can’t really say the same for the Jesus clip. Anyway, it’s a good thing you got ICA. We’re well-versed in all things car, and whether you encounter a problem with your Drag Link or your King Pin (Happy Pride Month, by the way... ;-), you can rest assured we know exactly what to do!
