First, I want to thank the newsletter for giving me a chance to speak my piece. It aināt easy doing what I do, day in and day out, that aggressive downpour you can set your watch to every afternoon. Itās not like I didnāt know what it was when I got here, but Iām saying though, I really think people underestimate how difficult it is to do what I do!
Iām Winston. A long time windshield wiper from out in the field. Iām good at my job and I usually donāt complain. I just chill against the glass, minding my own business, until a flick of the wipershield wiper stalk jolts me into action. Then, itās on.
But, I do have to keep it real. The rainy season, like it is right now, gets on my last nerve and Iām not sure my talents are as appreciated as they should be, especially if you out here expecting me to do my thing with dull blades and call yourself hitting the road for summertime trips.

Check it. Youāre driving along. You see clouds piling up in the distance. You see that gray stripe coming from the sky and hazing up the road ahead. You know what it is. Rain. You ready to pull the lever but itās just a drop here and there as youāre moving along. Aināt really time for a full on wiper situation. Itās all good. You can see. Then it starts getting a little heavier. This the part where it takes a little nuance. Is it enough rain for high? No. So I donāt go all out. I just swipe intermittently, not even on low, thatās how delicate the touch. When the rain picks up, I can go faster but not too fast yet because now Iām swiping but Iām squeaking, making streaks and I can tell by the look on your face, youāre getting an attitude. Well, Iām getting an attitude, too! Is it going to rain hard enough for a medium or high? Is it going to be a low or intermittent situation? Is the rain going to let up before we even get to it? Is it sideways rain? Is it fat drops or those little sprinkle ones? Iām thinking about all this, for YOU, and you got an attitude with me? Weāre in this weather together, so letās act like it.
When we get to the rain, itās the fat drops. Theyāre fast. Theyāre splattering up from the hood, the street, other peopleās cars. We go high on āem. Iām going left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left with a rhythm you can dance to and Iām working hard, you hear me? Slapping water out of our way so fast you see it popping off your side mirror! You aināt even got to slow down too much because you can see the cars ahead. Whatās more is you can see a break in the clouds, the sun peeking out from a space between the thunderheads. Weāre going to make it. We always do.
Iām not trying to gloat about how good I am at my job. Iām just trying to connect with you. Get you to see that when the storms come, I got you. We in this together.
Stay dry and stay cool,
Winston
